Coimbra's initial name Aeminium (Emion) is an ancient Roman town that was populated by the surviving people of the attack on their original land Conimbriga. It is located nearby the Mondego River. It still preserves a medieval city and the famous University for its beauty and history. The Baroque Joanina library and the bell tower of the 18th century are some of the attractions. In this medieval city there's also the Romanesque cathedral of the 12th century, the Old Cathedral of Coimbra and the ancient streets of different architectures influenced by the different religions that lived in full harmony.
